Farming

The Wirral Estate comprises approximately 5,000 acres of land and 12 established farms.

The 3rd Viscount Leverhulme gave young farmers a chance to establish themselves, and much of our land is now farmed by second-generation farming families, many of whom have diversified to broaden and reinforce their livelihoods.  Most of the farms include a farmhouse, outbuildings, land and cottages, usually occupied by farm staff.

The Estate includes dairy, beef and arable farmers, while the remainder of the land is let for grazing.  Conservation stewardship is encouraged across the Estate.

As Trustees we are seeking to rationalise and modernise the Estate’s farming operations, creating a modern farming structure that will better meet the aspirations of current and future generations.  An example of this is the ‘maize maze’ at Brimstage Hall Farm, where each year over 3 miles of pathways are incorporated into the maize crop to create a popular visitor attraction during the summer months.
